Surrey County Youth Percussion Ensemble and SPARC

Surrey County Percussion Ensemble gave its first public performance with its director Jackie Kendle at the Royal Albert Hall in November 2006. They performed a specially commissioned work by Gareth Giles. “Savannah” was specially written for the individual talents of the members.

Since then SCPE has taken part in the 2007 Farnham Festival where they performed “The Just So Stories” with the Just So Singers directed by Alison Wrigley, another specially commissioned work by Paul Ayres for the Just So Singers and their director Alison Wrigley.

SCPE has performed in music festivals, concert halls and even an Outdoor Centre where members were let loose on the River Thames in canoes! In 2010 they took part in the Guildhall Percussion Ensemble Day where they won first prize in their category.

Their repertoire is varied ranging from jazz to samba to TV & Film themes, performing on a wide range of instruments from congas to marimbas, djembes to xylophones!

SCPE comprises the “crème de la crème” of Surrey’s young percussionists. Aspiring members need to have experience of orchestral percussion (snare-drum, tuned & timpani) and should be approximately Grade 5 standard.

Rehearsals are on Saturdays from 9.00 – 11.00am during term time at Westfield School, Bonsey Lane, Woking GU22 9PR.
