Surrey Youth Choir
Director: Cole Bendall
Surrey Youth Choir (SYC) was founded in 1987 and since then has established itself as one of the leading youth choirs in the country.
It is a full SATB choir, comprising of singers, between the ages of 12 and 21 from all parts of Surrey, and performs an eclectic repertoire, both sacred and secular, ranging from early to contemporary, from baroque to romantic, including the major ‘standard’ choral works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert etc. We also commission pieces for specific performances.
The Choir usually gives one or two concerts each term; they have performed in major concert halls in both Surrey and London, and also toured extensively throughout Europe and the USA.
Many of our members audition successfully for the National Youth Choir and National Children’s Choir. Increasing numbers are taking up choral scholarships at University. Ex-members are now singing professionally, either as soloists, or members of small chamber choirs. Some are performing in music theatre, and others are teaching in schools and colleges throughout the UK.
Perhaps more importantly, the majority join local choirs – years after leaving SYC, singing remains an important part of their life.
Workshops and biannual overseas tours form an important integral part of our activities.
SYC rehearses each Wednesday evening during term time at The Marist School, West Byfleet from 6.45pm – 9.00pm. We have a team of tutors/accompanists who work with the Choir to develop members’ choral and individual singing skills through a range of musical opportunities beyond those available at school.
Open to all, no audition required. First term free to new members.
