Breaking The Bubble
Championing Inclusive Music Making
Breaking the Bubble is an innovation project formed in partnership between Surrey Music Hub, Sound Hub (Kent) and Sound City (Brighton and Hove) and is supported by Arts Council England and the Department for Education
In a specially commissioned survey of music provision in special schools across Kent, Surrey and Brighton & Hove Breaking The Bubble partners Drake Music identified a need for development work in three main areas:
- Provision of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and networking opportunities for teachers and hub staff
- Building of Communities of Practice (CoP) through online media and events
- Delivery of music projects and showcase events to inspire, celebrate achievement and raise aspirations

A menu of SEN/D music education specific CPD and networking opportunities is available through Surrey Music Hub, Sound Hub and Sound City throughout the year.

Central to the Breaking the Bubble strategy for developing music provision for children and young people with SEN/D is the aim to foster the development of Communities of Practice
The community of practitioners working with children and young people with SEN/D will be provided with opportunities to come together and share knowledge and skills.

Free music taster sessions in and out of school time will be provided for special schools including tuition and workshops in, singing, instrumental and ensemble playing, percussion, Rock & Pop Band and interactive music making using iPads and Assistive Music Technology (AMT).
Schools will then have the opportunity and support to arrange ongoing delivery of music through their regional hubs and partner music organisations.

Watch a video of a recent one day workshop event and concert bringing together students with SEN from across Surrey, professional musicians from VOCES8 and Apollo5 with students from the Yehudi Menuhin School.
